Introduce a little colour into your diet with delicious beetroot

With its stunning pink colour beetroot is one food that can never be described as boring. Although always popular amongst foodies it is now making a comeback amongst the masses and is well on its way to becoming one of our favourite vegetables. It’s a sure fire way to brighten up any salad or family meal and is the ideal ingredient to complement many savoury dishes. Thanks to its sweet taste and tender texture it’s almost certain to be a crowd pleaser.

As well as pepping up a simple salad it can be used as an ingredient or an accompaniment in a multitude of other dishes such as soups, pizzas, chutneys, roast dinners or breads. And let’s not forget our personal favourite – beetroot brownie!

Eat more beetroot and your body (and brain!) will thank you for it

This little vegetable is jam packed with healthy nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, iron, vitamins A, B6 and C, folic acid, carbohydrates, protein, soluble fibre and antioxidants and it has also been linked with reducing blood pressure and fighting heart disease thanks to its high concentration of nitrate. Additionally, research has shown that drinking beetroot juice can increase blood flow to the brain which may be able to fight the progression of dementia.

When to buy and what to look out for

Beetroot is available all year round but it is at its best in the latter part of the year, from July through to January. When buying beetroot you should ensure that the leaves and stems are intact with skin that is smooth and without blemishes.
